Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care And Acid Reflux Gerd
How could Gerd and Reflux Disease be related to your neck? Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care is a discipline of health care that can explain the relationship. Your brain, brain stem and spinal cord control all function in your body. Messages travel from the brain , through the neck, down the spinal cord and are responsible for controlling the muscles, glands, and organs of the body. Throughout life most of us have trauma- Whiplash injuries,Sports injuries, slip and fall accidents and other traumas. The head weighs 10-13 lbs and it rest on the atlas (c-1) that weighs 2 ounces. This structural relationship makes the upper neck vulnerable to injury. The scientific literature is growing that shows how upper neck misalignment impacts the nervous system and interferes with normal function (2).
There are two types of muscles in your body – smooth muscle and skeletal muscle. Smooth muscle is directly under the control of the autonomic nervous system. You do not think about its function, it happens automatically. The muscle that controls whether or not stomach acid enters your esophagus or not is controlled by smooth muscle. It is directly controlled by the central nervous system. Reflux can be caused by improper autonomic control of this muscle resulting from interference to the central nervous system in the upper neck.
