Mid-Back Pain Usually Is Adaptive To Neck Injury | Upper Cervical Chiropractic Los Angeles | Mid-Back Pain Treatment Los Angeles
Chronic Mid Back Pain is a common annoyance that a large percentage of the population deal with daily. Sudden onset
of mid-back pain can be something to worry about. In some rare instances it can be associated with heart attack, reflux and other non-musculo-skeletal health problems. While there are many reasons that mid-back pain can develop, chronic mid back pain that is long-standing is almost always musculoskeletal in origin. In this article we will discuss one of the most common reasons people suffer with this condition.
Anterior Head Bearing Resulting From Upper Neck Misalignment
Your head weighs 10-12 pounds and sits on the end of a “stick” your neck. When balanced properly over your upper shoulders everyone is happy. However, when a trauma occurs, shearing motions can tear the soft tissue, damage the ligaments, and displace the top vertebra in the neck. This injury sets in motion a laundry list of effects that can radiate throughout the body over time. First, the neck injury causes postural adaptation. One of these adaptations is known as ANTERIOR HEAD BEARING(fig. 1). In response to the upper neck injury, the body will try to accommodate the injury by compensating the spine to best dea lwith the irritation to the nerve system. Commonly, one hip is higher, one shoulder is higher, and the head usually lists to one side more than the other.(Fig. 2) From the side, the head protrudes forward off of its center, the shoulders roll forward . Each individual adapts uniquely but 90 percent of people develop anterior head bearing.
Anterior Head Bearing Causes Mid-Back Muscle Contraction To Stabilize Balance In Posture
It is estimated that every 3/8 of an inch the head migrates forward off of its balanced axis it increases the weight of the head by double effectively on the upper back muscles. This is one reason so many feel tightness in the their upper shoulders. To deal with this compensation the mid back muscles must contract to counterbalance the heads forward posture. The body is always having to stabilize itself against gravity in an upright position. Most patients who we see in our office with severe mid-thoracic and upper-back stiffness have lost their cervical curve-hypolordosis. And in some cases they are in a reverse cervical curve-kyphosis. iI this is you what can you do about it?
Upper Cervical Chiropractic Los Angeles- Corrective Care
Upper Cervical Doctors are trained to find upper neck spinal misalignments that interfere with normal neurological function. Objective tests are run to determine whether or not you have a spinal misalignment. If found a precise set of x-rays are taken to determine exactly what direction and how far you have misaligned. Once ascertained the data is used in a precise spinal correction to the offending vertebrae. Once the irritation is removed from the brain-stem the body goes through a healing process. We explained above how upper neck injury can cause postural faults including anterior head bearing. And that chronic mid-back pain is nothing more than your bodies best attempt at stabilize itself against gravity. Once the cause of that postural fault is corrected the body will migrate back towards structural balance. Not only do musculoskeletal problems improve but oftentimes other health problems that they did not know were related improve also.
Over time an upper cervical doctor will monitor your case with objective tests to determine if and when you need a correction. The goal of upper cervical care is to “hold” the correction for as long as possible. It is while the vertebrae stays”clear” of the spinal cord that healing accrues. If you or a loved one suffers with mid back pain or other chronic health troubles it would be wise to get checked to see if you can be helped with this cutting edge procedure.
