Birth Trauma, Non-Invasive Upper Cervical Solutions | What is Birth Trauma?

What is birth trauma? Trauma during birth is more common than you think. There are many twists and turns (pun intended) that can occur during the delivery process. The path down the birth canal can be a difficult one. We have all heard about the horror stories of 29-hour labors, infants having collar bones broken because they are stuck in the birth canal, and oftentimes the necessity to use vacuum extraction or forceps during the delivery process. All of these scenarios can cause trauma during birth that can cause spinal misalignment at the most critical area of human anatomy- the cranio-cervical junction (CCJ). In this article we will discuss forced birth trauma, birth traumas effects on a baby, and how birth trauma can set the stage for a cascade of neurological problems down the road if it is not corrected properly. Because of the inherent trauma associated with birth trauma it is essential that young kids be checked for cranio-cervical junction misalignment as to avoid future health problems. We will discuss a little known noninvasive procedure, called Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic , which gently and precisely corrects cranio-cervical junction misalignment. By the articles end we hope you understand – What is Birth trauma? And more importantly you understand the necessity for young children to be examined for its presence and correction.

What is Birth Trauma? |The Most Common Birth Trauma

It is obvious to anyone who studies the anatomy of an infant that not only are infants malleable and resilient, they are also susceptible to birth trauma especially in the cranial cervical junction. The head neck relationship has the most freedom of movement compared to any other part of the spine. Freedom of movement also means that it is more susceptible to misalignment. Unfortunately, birth trauma is under reported, under documented, and commonly goes unchecked because of a lack of its awareness.

Forced Birth Trauma – What is Birth Trauma?

Forceps Delivery- Excessive Force – Do Forceps Deliveries Set Stage for Chronic Health Problems?

Forceps are smooth metal instruments that look like large spoons or tongs. They’re curved to fit around the baby’s head. The forceps are carefully positioned around your baby’s head and joined together at the handles.

With a contraction and pushing the obstetrician gently pulls to help the delivery. Unfortunately, it is estimated that forceps deliveries exert upwards of 250 Newton’s of force. (1 newton equals .225 pounds)

On Oct. of 2014 an observational study done on deliveries was preformed to assess the amount of force used in assisted extraction deliveries. “The median (minimum–maximum) peak forces for minimum, average and excessive vacuum extraction in the clinical setting were 176 N (40lbs) (5–360 N), 225 N (50lbs) (115–436 N), and 241 N (54 lbs.) (164–452 N), respectively. In 34% of cases a force in excess of 216 N (40 lbs.) was employed. (2)”

This amount of force can cause misalignment at the CCJ junction. In fact, Dr. Gutmann from Germany published research in 1989 (3) which showed 82 percent of children born in hospitals have Atlantal nerve block. It is assumed that since forceps deliver requires greater forces to the neck than regular vaginal delivery the incidents of upper cervical injury and atlas subluxation far exceeds 82 percent.

In respect to our OBGYN colleagues, forceps often can save a child’s life, however there should be protection locks in place that if used the child is immediately checked for CCJ misalignment and if present corrected by a trained upper cervical chiropractor. Instituting this one policy would save thousands of children from health problems that occur from trauma associated with birth trauma, forceps delivery trauma, and other trauma that occurs during the delivery process.

What is Birth Trauma?

Vacuum extraction- “Vent House” Extraction

A vent house (vacuum extractor) is an instrument that’s attached to the baby’s head by suction. A soft or hard plastic or metal cup is attached by a tube to a suction device. The cup fits firmly on to your baby’s head. During a contraction and with the help of your pushing, the obstetrician or midwife gently pulls to help deliver your baby.

A venthouse isn’t used if you’re giving birth at less than 34 weeks pregnant because your baby’s head is too soft. It’s less likely to cause vaginal tearing than forceps.

Birth Trauma Effects on Baby- What is Birth Trauma?

Birth trauma effects an infant by decreasing nervous system function resulting from structural misalignment of the CCJ (neck skull junction). Since the nervous system is the seat of control for all function, CCJ misalignment can be the cause or a causative agent in a plethora of health conditions.

What is Birth Trauma? And Why Your Child Should be Check Shortly After Birth for CCJ Misalignment

As we have discussed CCJ trauma and associated subluxation (misalignment) is ubiquitous during delivery. Unfortunately, there is little awareness of it and children are affected for the rest of their life if it’s not corrected.

The junction between the head and neck is the most important structural and neurological region of the body. The brain stem, which is housed by the atlas and axis, is responsible for almost everything that runs in your body that doesn’t require conscious thought. The brain stem controls cardiac function, postural muscle tone control, blood pressure regulation, respiratory control and a host of other functions that are vital to health. When the CCJ is compromised it leads to a cascade of neurological problems that can overtime morph into many of the chronic conditions that plague many of our youth and adult populations (4). Our office is filled with patients suffering from chronic conditions such as migraines, Post-Concussion syndrome, Meniere’s disease, vertigo, fibromyalgia, cognitive struggles, emotional issues and other conditions that can be affected by correction of the CCJ junction. Our goal is to correct misalignment of the CCJ before these problems turn into the long-term chronic conditions that many in our adult population suffer with. Unfortunately, because of the way we are indoctrinated in our mainstream health system, our office isn’t filled with kids it’s filled with adults that have been struggling for years. Most of their problems could have been avoided has they had the awareness earlier on and corrected the most vital area for human health, the brand betel, the spinal cord and its relationship with the skull and neck.

What exactly does a Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractor Do? what is Birth Trauma

Our Los Angeles upper Cervical Health cate offices have three doctors who have seen over 10000 patients over the past 18 years. Our doctors are specially trained to locate, analyze, and correct upper cervical spine misalignments. The procedure is precise, gentle and effective.

Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractors take precise imaging in the form of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) or digital x-ray to determine the exact direction of joint misalignment. This works because the joints in the neck are mirror images of one another.  Therefore, if a whiplash or other injury damages the soft tissue and ligaments that support normal joint motion the joints can become misaligned. Imaging the joints will allow the doctor to see how you are out of alignment and the angulation of your joints. This information is then used to make a precise spinal correction unique the individuals misalignment and anatomy. Once corrected, the patient is then monitored over time to ensure that the body is healing, and the correction is staying in its normal range of motion. If on subsequent visits the vertebrae have misaligned again another correction is administered. If the objective tests indicate that there is no interference and the vertebrae are in their proper range of motion, then no correction is necessary.

If you or a loved one has a child who you suspect has suffered a misalignment at the CCJ or you are just looking for better health our Los Angeles offices offer a FREE consultation.
