Can straight neck syndrome adjustments be dangerous?
Straight neck syndrome is easily determined by taking a lateral weight-bearing X-ray in the neutral position. In our Los Angeles-based Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic Office, we find that 40 percent of our new patient population has a straight neck. Injury to the top of the neck, known as the cranial cervical junction (CJ), can interfere with the postural centers and be the underlying cause of this condition.
In a Blair upper cervical chiropractic office, our goal is to restore normal motion and neurology of the upper cervical spine. Since the postural centers are located at the CCJ, correcting spinal misalignment in this area can allow the body to naturally regain its normal cervical curve.
Blair's upper cervical adjustments do not make any twisting, popping, or pulling movements. Also, prior to correcting any patient advanced imaging is taken to view the joints where misalignment occurs. Great care is taken in making corrections that are uniquely tailored to each patient’s anatomy and misalignment direction.
Why straight neck syndrome occurs?
This condition is caused by upper cervical spine trauma. Trauma does a few things:
- Damages the soft tissue, ligaments, and muscle which leads to abnormal joint motion.
- Abnormal joint motion increases muscle tone ( muscle tightness)
- Muscle tightness reduces joint motion and further entrenches chronic postural muscle tone throughout the spine.
Straight neck syndrome is first and foremost the result of injury to the cervical spine. This results in increased muscle tone which causes the pulling forward of the neck resulting in this condition.
Other factors in today’s society that encourage this condition are texting, long-distance commuting, computer use, and long-term sitting. Most of today’s technological advancements have to lead to posture and lifestyle habits that reinforce a straight neck.
What is a straight neck syndrome?
Straight neck syndrome, sometimes referred to as “ military neck” is a condition where the normal lordosis(backward c-shaped curve) has been lost. The cervical lordosis develops as a baby learns the lift the head.
During this developmental milestone, the reverse curve from fetal development begins to reverse itself as the infant learns to maintain the head over its shoulders.
This occurs around the third month following delivery. Straight neck syndrome can occur due to birth trauma (forceps delivery), slips and falls, sports trauma, car accidents, and other injuries to the neck.
The following symptoms can result from straight neck syndrome:
- decreased range of motion
- pain in the neck and the extremities (fingers and toes)
- coordination problems
- muscle weakness
- spine deformity
- cognitive problems
- bladder and bowel control issues
Not everyone with a straight neck will experience the same symptoms. Paralysis, bladder control issues, and bowel control issues are only present in extreme cases, especially when the condition is left uncorrected.
What is the best chiropractic technique for straight neck syndrome?
The best technique to help the body correct straight neck syndrome is the one that clears the upper cervical spine of the underlying misalignment that caused it in the first place.
Since straight neck syndrome is caused by spinal misalignment due to neck injury getting to a chiropractor who specializes in correcting the upper cervical spine is prudent. While all chiropractors adjust the neck Blair's Upper Cervical Chiropractors are especially focused and trained to precisely and gently correct the neck.
Blair upper cervical chiropractors use precise imaging to ascertain exactly which joint in the neck has misaligned, what direction, and how much. Once this is determined a gentle noninvasive correction is made with no popping twisting or pulling of the neck.
Can straight neck syndrome cause ear problems?
Because the upper cervical spine houses the control centers for human physiology straight neck syndrome can be related to a wide range of conditions including TMJ and ear pain.
One of the most common conditions we see in our Los Angeles Blair Upper Cervical Office are vestibular disorders. One common symptom is Eustachian tube dysfunction and ear pain. The inner ear, the muscles surrounding the jaw and ear are intimately connected to the biomechanics and physiology of the upper cervical spine. Commonly, we find correction of the neck leads to TMJ and ear pain improvement.
Does chiropractic offer straight neck syndrome treatment?
The goal of our Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic Office is to remove spinal misalignment that is interfering with normal function in the body. We do not have specific adjustments for specific conditions. With that said, correcting spinal misalignments often will allow the BODY to recover lost normal spinal curves. Our motto is “ nature needs no help just no interference.”
We remove the block and the body does the healing. With that said upper cervical care is NOT a cure-all. It only allows the body to do its best to correct whatever was caused by the injury to the upper cervical spine and whatever was associated with it. We have had many patients recover lost cervical curves but it was the result of correcting spinal misalignment to allow the body to function better.
