Is Torticollis treated by Chiropractic?

Is Torticollis solved with Chiropractic Therapy?

Sometimes Chiropractic is referred to as chiropractic therapy, however, chiropractic is not a therapy it is a method of correcting spinal misalignments in the spine that reduces the body's ability to function properly.

Chiropractic therapy for infant and adult Torticollis is much the same. Torticollis in most cases is caused by underlying joint misalignment that causes the musculature of the neck to become spastic, pulling the neck over to the side and rotated to the left or right.  Finding out exactly which neck vertebrae is misaligned and correcting it can allow the body to rebalance the musculature correcting Torticollis.

Infant Torticollis

A birth process is oftentimes a traumatic event. Chiropractic therapy or chiropractic adjustment can help correct misalignment induced by the birth process. Especially in the three percent of deliveries in the US that use vacuum extraction and forceps deliveries. Both of these interventions produce anywhere from 80-120 pounds of force on the baby's neck. This far exceeds the force necessary to tear soft tissue and produce spinal misalignment at the skull neck junction.

Babies with Torticollis are often the result of difficult delivery and the first place they should seek care is an upper cervical chiropractic office. Our Los Angeles based upper cervical chiropractic offices have helped many infants and young kids with Torticollis, speech delay, and neuro-developmental disorders recover their health through precision correction of the upper two bones in the neck, atlas, and axis.

Because young kids have had a limited time of spinal trauma their response to care is far faster than adults. We love taking care of children because their response time is rapid!

Adult Torticollis

There are several different types of Torticollis. The most common type of Torticollis is self-limiting and often occurs following sleep near a cold draft. Also known as wry neck, Torticollis is painful and severely impacts the cervical spine range of motion and daily activity. The good news is Torticollis is self-limiting and upper cervical chiropractic care can help these cases recover much quicker than doing nothing.

A second less common form of torticollis is spasmodic torticollis. This form of torticollis is in the dystonia family and is chronic and often lifelong. It has been our experience in our Los Angeles offices that spasmodic Torticollis can improve greatly with regular upper cervical chiropractic visits.

This form of torticollis is stubborn and takes long term care to manage. We have seen many cases fully recover while others improve markedly.

Torticollis Signs and Symptoms

  • Because spasmodic torticollis is an abnormal contraction of the muscle in one side of the neck, people will appear with their head turned to one side. Neck muscles and those between the neck and shoulder will be tense and tender, often causing neck pain.
  • People with acute torticollis can have severe pain and be unwilling to turn their head to one side or may have their head turned slightly away from the side of discomfort.
  • Deviation of the eyes (oculogyric crisis) where the eyes involuntarily look upward and protrusion of the tongue (buccolingual crisis) where the tongue sticks out involuntarily may also occur.
  •  With spasmodic torticollis (cervical dystonia), there may be neck muscle spasms that are sustained and contract in a rhythmic fashion.
  • Other symptoms may include shoulder pain, back pain, headache, neck cramps, muscle tightness, muscle pain, or burning sensations.

What exactly is Blair upper cervical chiropractic - chiropractic therapy or health restoration?

Blair Upper Cervical doctors are specially trained to find spinal misalignments in the upper cervical spine. This is determined by running the prospective patient through a battery of neurological tests that locate the spinal segments that have been injured and misaligned by a prior neck injury.

Once located, precision imaging in the form of digital x-ray or cone-beam computed tomography (Cbct) is used to precisely determine which joint has misaligned and the angulation of the offending joint. Each person’s anatomy is different and therefore imaging is used to uncover the blueprint to be used to correct each patient’s individual misalignment pattern.

Once this information is gleaned, a gentle, light correction is made without twisting, popping, or pulling. The patient is then monitored overtime to ensure that the correction is holding. If the testing indicates the need for another correction, then it is performed.

However, the goal of Blair Upper Cervical Care is for the patient to stay in “adjustment”. It isn’t the correction that produces healing. It is the removal of nerve irritation and the adjustment “holding” in its normal position that allows the body to function better and proceed through a healing process.
