Migraine and Neck Trauma- RESEARCH
Blair Upper Cervical Care is a rapidly growing natural health care discipline that has been helping people with a plethora of health problems improve including migraine headaches. Most migraine sufferers have had neck trauma that predates their health problems. The Blair Upper Cervical Doctor is concerned with correcting the misalignments at the base of the skull caused by head trauma.

In 1991 research was published indicating a link between neck trauma and the onset of migraine headaches: Post-traumatic migraine: chronic migraine precipitated by the minor head or neck trauma published by Weiss HD, et al. Headache 1991 showed in their abstract a migraine neck trauma connection:
“Minor trauma to the head or neck is occasionally followed by severe chronic headaches. We have evaluated 35 adults (27 women, 8 men) with no prior history of headaches, who developed recurrent episodic attacks typical of common or classic migraine following minor head or neck injuries ("post-traumatic migraine"-PTM).
The median age of these patients was 38 years (range 17 to 63 years), which is older than the usual age at onset of an idiopathic migraine.
The trauma was relatively minor: 14 patients experienced head trauma with brief loss of consciousness, 14 patients sustained head trauma without loss of consciousness, and 7 patients had a "whiplash" neck injury with no documented head trauma.
Headaches began immediately or within the first few days after the injury. PTM typically recurred several times per week and was often incapacitating. The patients had been unsuccessfully treated by other physicians, and there was a median delay of 4 months (range 1 to 30 months) before the diagnosis of PTM was suspected.
The response to prophylactic anti-migraine medication (propranolol or amitriptyline used alone or in combination) was gratifying, with 21 of 30 adequately treated patients (70%) reporting a dramatic reduction in the frequency and severity of their headaches. Improvement was noted in 18 of the 23 patients (78%) who were still involved in litigation at the time of treatment.
The neurologic literature has placed excessive emphasis on compensation neurosis and psychological factors in the etiology of chronic headaches after minor trauma. Physicians must be aware of PTM, as it is both common and treatable.”
Migraine and Your Neck
It is well documented in the research literature that migraine headaches are due to a problem in the vascular system. Initially, the precursor to a migraine is the classic “aura” people experience. Some experience changes in vision, such as tunnel vision, and others have Klaipeda ops colors filter through their field of vision. This is due to a construction in the arteriole system. In response to the constriction in the vascular system, the nervous system overcompensates and causes dilation of the blood vessels.
Dilation is what produces the onset of extreme pain experienced by migraine sufferers. For many, the pain is so severe that they are locked in a dark room for hours and sometimes days until the body rights itself. Since the vascular system is directly controlled by the central nervous system, we find that a large majority of those that suffer from migraine do so as a result of neck misalignment causing subsequent nervous system interference.
Our Los Angeles upper cervical office has helped hundreds of migraine sufferers either greatly improve or recover from chronic migraines.

What Does a Blair Upper Cervical Do?
Blair Upper Cervical doctors are specially trained to find spinal misalignments in the upper cervical spine. This is determined by running the prospective patient through a battery of neurological tests that locate the spinal segments that have been injured and misaligned by a prior neck injury.
Once located, precision imaging in the form of digital x-ray or cone-beam computed tomography (Cbct) is used to precisely determine which joint has misaligned and the angulation of the offending joint. Each person’s anatomy is different and therefore imaging is used to uncover the blueprint to be used to correct each patient’s individual misalignment pattern. Once this information is gleaned, a gentle, light correction is made without twisting, popping, or pulling.
The patient is then monitored over time to ensure that the correction is holding. If the testing indicates the need for another correction, then it is performed. However, the goal of Blair Upper Cervical Care is for the patient to stay in “adjustment”. It isn’t the correction that produces healing. It is the removal of nerve irritation and the adjustment “holding” in its normal position that allows the body to function better and proceed through a healing process.
