Should You Worry About Text Neck? Xbox Neck?

Every day, we all see people bent over their desks, restaurant tables and other seats texting or typing away on their mobile devices. And while children and teens find all sorts of the technology interesting, their bodies do not. In our Los Angeles offices where we practice Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic, we have been seen a rapid increase in young children with reverse cervical curves- hypolordosis.

Dr. Hall explains the term Xbox neck or text neck to make it clear that the neck pain is caused by looking down at video game screens, cell phones, and laptops. What makes these postures even worse is the slouching that usually accompanies the forward bent neck. These two factors put an incredible amount of stress on the cervical spine and can exacerbate existing neck pain, shoulder pain, and headaches.

The head-neck junction is a precarious joint. The head weighs on average 10-13 pounds and rests on c-1(atlas) that weighs 2 ounces. Research has shown that when a person bends their head forward 15 degrees it effectively increases the weight of the head to 27 pounds.

Now imagine that your head is bent forward at 45 degrees, now you are putting 45-pound stress on the neck and shoulder muscles. This extra weight over time can cause repetitive stress injuries to the discs of the neck and long term lead to a host of musculoskeletal complaints down the road.

Dr.Hall has taken care of patients with Xbox neck. These patients complain of neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, elbow, wrist, and hand pain. Most of these patients, prior to receiving upper cervical care, are taking over the counter pain relievers to relieve the pain.

What they don’t know is that a gentle, precise correction to the upper cervical spine can help them naturally. Later in this article, we will discuss the importance of the upper neck and its effect it has not only on neck pain but overall body health.

Text neck or Xbox neck, however, is not the only ailment caused by excessive technology use.

"Carpal tunnel is a problem for anyone whose work conditions or electronic use calls for repetitive movements. For example, when typing at a computer or using only the thumbs while speed texting," said Dr.Hall. "We use a natural, precise, gentle form of care whose end goal is to allow your body to adapt better to the stress that is placed on it.”

How Can Upper Cervical Chiropractic In Los Angeles Help You Overcome The Ravages of Technology?

An Upper Cervical Chiropractors' sole focus is to release spinal cord tension at the CCJ (craniocervical, skull, c-1, and c-2) to allow the central nervous system to function optimally. As discussed, when the upper neck is misaligned it causes the muscles through the spine to become imbalanced.

By correcting the underlying cause of the spinal imbalance, the body can “straighten” itself out. Upper Cervical Doctors take precise x-rays of the upper cervical spine to determine exactly how your joint anatomy is built (everyone is different) and to determine what direction your atlas has misaligned.

Once these factors are determined a precise spinal correction is made. There is no popping twisting or pulling of the neck. The goal of the procedure is to “hold” the correction in its normal position so the body can heal itself.

Little importance has been placed on the body’s own recuperative power. Sadly, too much emphasis has been placed on surgeries and the marketing of pharmaceutical drugs. While there are ties where both are necessarily more people would avoid surgeries and a life full of pain killers if they would correct the underlying cause of not only back pain but most chronic health issues.
