What makes these postures even worse is the slouching that usually accompanies the forward bent neck. The head-neck junction is a precarious joint. The head weighs on average 10-13 pounds and rests on c-1(atlas) that weighs 2 ounces. Research has shown that when a person bends their head forward 15 degrees it effectively increases the weight of the head to 27 pounds.
Now imagine that your head is bent forward at 45 degrees, now you are putting 45-pound stress on the neck and shoulder muscles. This extra weight over time can cause repetitive stress injuries to the discs of the neck and long term lead to a host of musculoskeletal complaints down the road.
