Eustachian Tube Dysfunction and Neck Injury

Eustachian Tube Dysfunction and Neck Injury

Our Los Angeles Upper Cervical Health Care offices see many vestibular syndrome patients including, Meniere’s disease, vertigo, and tinnitus. One of the most common symptoms present in these cases is a clogged Eustachian tube, medically known as eustachian tube dysfunction.  Many patients describe eustachian tube dysfunction as a feeling of having cotton stuck in their ear or the inability to clear their inner ear with yawning.  It is an awful sensation that is difficult to treat with conventional medical care. There is hope with an emerging healthcare discipline called upper cervical health care which focuses on correcting structural misalignments in the neck that reduce nervous system function.

What is Eustachian Tube Dysfunction?

There are two muscles that control the eustachian tubes ability to stay open and communication with the inner ear and throat.  The tensor veli palatini muscle and the tensor tympani control the Eustachian tubes patency.  These two muscles are controlled by the fifth cranial nerve, more specifically the mandibular branch.  When these two muscles lose their normal muscle tone it can cause eustachian tube dysfunction. Often times the combination of allergies (which cause inner ear tissue swelling) and cranial nerve V dysfunction create the perfect storm for Meniere’s disease and vertigo.  This is why many Meniere’s disease sufferers find that they are more prone to attacks in the spring.

The Upper Cervical Spine and Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

Blair Upper Cervical Technique is a form of Upper Cervical Health Care that is used in our Los Angeles based upper cervical spine centers. The approach of upper cervical care is quite different than symptom treatment and therapy. The central nervous system controls and coordinates ALL body function and as a result, if it is interfered with then it cannot carry out the bodies functions normally.

Injuries to the upper neck can lead to atlas and or axis misalignment. When an injury occurs, the soft tissue surrounding the upper neck can become injured. Spinal misalignment and loss of joint motion can result.  Through many different mechanisms, this injury can irritate and interfere with the brain stem and many of its control centers.  Many people suffering from Eustachian tube dysfunction is the direct result of upper neck misalignment.

Our Los Angeles based doctors are specially trained in Blair upper cervical work to find prior upper neck injury. Post-concussion, whiplash, and other trauma can cause the head-neck junction or craniocervical junction(CCJ) to misalign. Misalignments at the craniocervical junction (CCJ) have a large impact on the central nervous system and can be responsible for a host of chronic health conditions. Blair upper cervical chiropractors are specially trained to locate spinal misalignment. Once located precise 3-d imaging of the neck can view each joint in the neck to determine misalignment direction and joint angle. By imaging the joints between the head and neck a precise misalignment pattern can be gleaned that is individual to each person. Once located a precise adjustment is made that does NOT include any twisting popping or pulling.

Once corrected the patient is monitored over a period of time to ensure the correction is “holding”. If the objective findings suggest that the vertebrae have misaligned again another correction or adjustment is made. If the test indicates that it is in its normal range of motion no correction is made. Blair technique relies on the body’s own inherent healing capacity. With that said it is paramount that the patient is checked over time to allow the body to heal.
