Grand mal seizures are a neurological condition that afflicts 3 million people in the United States. Two years ago I was just starting a consultation with an gran mal seizure patient when he suddenly started screaming and writhing, uncontrollably for the better part of three minutes. His mom was in the consultation and calmly did what she could to help her son. It was obvious she had been through this many times before.
While I had taken care of many different patients with seizure conditions, I had never personally seen someone go through a grand mal seizure. It made my heart ache that there are people out there that suffer through grand mal seizures on a regular basis. In life we often here about different conditions or diseases and they pass through our consciousness without us understanding their impact on people.
Experiencing a grand mal seizure as a bystander made me peer through a window of what the patient with grand mal seizure goes through along with those that love them. In this article we would like to present information about the upper cervical spine and it’s relationship to seizure disorders.
While Blair Upper Cervical care is NOT a cure all for grand mal seizure over the past 18 years we have had success with many types of seizure cases and would like to convey how correcting upper cervical spine misalignments can improve health, well being, and in some cases either reduce or eliminate seizure disorders.
The Central Nervous system is the seat of control for every function in the human body. As far as our health is concerned, the nervous system does not enter into our health education at any level in American society. If the nervous system runs all functions in the body then if disease or ill health exists the central nervous system should be of paramount importance in the cause.
Unfortunately our mainstream health system doesn’t look for causes but rather is in the business of medicating people to reduce symptoms. Asking what the cause of a condition is generally is explained away by “ no one really knows” or it’s genetic. The universe is governed by LAWS and so to is the body. For every effect there must be a cause. Disease, health syndromes, and symptoms don’t just occur for no reason.
They occur because physiology malfunctions and in order to get well it is essential to know what the cause is so you can remove it. It is has been our experience in our Los Angeles Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic office that many of the tough health conditions require many forms of care simultaneously to recover lost health. We have also found that since the body is a self healing organism that it’s essential to add things to your health program that support the body in its attempt to heal, mend, and repair.
There are several pillars that must be heeded in order to get well. Nutrition, sleep, exercise, stress reduction, central nervous system and spiritual foundation are the pillars of health and healing. Violating one or many of them increases your chances of developing health problems. In life many things happen that are out of our control. Anyone who suffers with gran mal seizure certainly didn’t ask for it. However, if you are suffering there are things you can do that will help support your recovery.
According to 2016 statistics from NARIC, 2.5 million Americans are estimated to sustain traumatic brain injuries each year. Brain injury and neck injury can set the stage for nervous system degeneration. TBI seizures can result from one or more of the following:
Brain injury seizures in the days following a TBI are common and are classified as early post-traumatic seizures (PTS). According to the Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center (MSKTC), one in 10 people who require hospitalization after a TBI will experience seizures. (Depending on the resource, this number can increase to 1-5 out of every 10 individuals with TBIs.)
Seizure activity that occurs more than a week after the initial injury (known as a late post-traumatic seizure) qualify as epilepsy or, more specifically, post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE). This means that there is likely a link between traumatic brain injury and epilepsy.
A 2015 study written on Seizure on traumatic brain injury and epilepsy, “traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of acquired epilepsy,” and post-traumatic epilepsy accounts for 10–20% of epilepsy cases in the general population. Next we will discuss how Neck injury can also be an underlying factor in the genesis and treatment of post traumatic gran mal seizure and seizure activity.
There is plenty of discussion and research focused on the effects of brain injury following head trauma but little research or discussion about neck injury. Any trauma big enough to cause brain injury simultaneously damages the soft tissues of the most critical area of human anatomy the cranio cervical junction (CCJ).
The CCJ is arguably the most dynamic and complex region of the body. The weight of the head being 10-12 pounds rests on a two ounce bone called the atlas. This region is structurally vulnerable to injury. The forces that cause a TBI also damage the ligaments, joint capsules, and soft tissue of the CCJ leading to spinal misalignment and neurological irritation and interference.
We have found in our Los Angeles Upper Cervical Health Care office that TBI and Post Concussion Syndrome respond well to precision correction of the upper cervical spine. Typically these types of cases have run the gamut of conventional and alternative care and no one has tested for nor corrected spinal injury occurring at the CCJ.
Because the CCJ houses the brain stem , structural injury to this area of anatomy can have profound negative effects on the bodies ability to function normally. We have found that many grand mal seizure patients respond well to long term Blair Upper Cervical correction.
Blair Upper Cervical doctors are specially trained to find spinal misalignments in the upper cervical spine. This is determined by running the prospective patient through a battery of neurological tests that locate the spinal segments that have been injured and misaligned by a prior neck Injury.
Once located, precision imaging in the form of digital x-ray or cone beam computed tomography (Cbct) is used to precisely determine which joint has misaligned and the angulation of the offending joint. Each person’s anatomy is different and therefore imaging is used to uncover the blueprint to be used to correct each patient’s individual misalignment pattern. Once this information is gleaned, a gentle, light correction is made without twisting, popping, or pulling.
The patient is then monitored over time to ensure that the correction is holding. If the testing indicates the need for another correction, then it is performed. However, the goal of Blair Upper Cervical Care is for the patient to stay in “adjustment”. It isn’t the correction that produces healing. It is the removal of nerve irritation and the adjustment “holding” in its normal position that allows the body to function better and proceed through a healing process.
