Lordosis Condition and Chiropractic Treatment

Lordosis Condition and Chiropractic Treatment

Cervical lordosis is a technical term that indicates the neck has a normal backwards c-shaped curve.  Cervical lordosis is the normal posture of the neck, however, in this fast paced accident laden life we live, loss of cervical lordosis or “military neck “ is common place. Trauma associated with whiplash type injuries can set the stage for poor posture and loss of normal cervical lordosis. In this article we will discuss, cervical kyphosis, military neck, and talk about a little known procedure called Blair Upper Cervical Technique that can get to the underlying cause of postural imbalance.

Lordosis Definition:

The normal convex curvature of the cervical and lumbar regions of the spine.

Why is Cervical Lordosis Important and Why Should You Correct it if it is Lost?

During embryonic development and early development in childhood, there are stages the spine assumes that are part of normal development. When a fetus is in utero the entire spine is shaped like a C.  When a baby is born and starts to lift its own head this reverses the fetal curve to the normal backwards c shape called lordosis.  As the child begins to crawl the forward c-shaped lumbar curve from fetal development reverses itself also. The neck and low back, in a normally developed spine share the same direction of curvature, while the thoracic spine maintains the c – shaped curve that was present in utero.  The different curves in the spine balance the weight of the head over the shoulders, provide shock absorption from daily living and house the bodies most important structure for survival, the spinal cord.

When the body maintains its normal curve, the discs remain healthy and the spine moves properly, firing the nervous system normally and keeps the individual healthy.  Trauma throughout life can CAUSE the bodies postural muscles to become imbalanced and lead to a loss of cervical and lumbar lordosis. One of the most common things we see in our office with new patients is a military neck (complete loss of cervical lordosis).  When the spine becomes straight it puts tensile stress on the spinal cord, causes unequal stress on the spinal discs, and decreases the bodies nervous system capabilities and can be related to a host of musculoskeletal aches and pains and even be related to neuro degenerative diseases. Therefore, if you have lost the normal curves of the spine it is imperative that you address the underlying cause of the imbalance, spinal misalignment at the base of skull, called atlas subluxation.

How Can Blair Upper Cervical Technique Help Postural Imbalance?

The brainstem, which is housed by the cranium, atlas and axis, is the nerve center that controls postural muscle tone. Sudden blunt trauma can cause the atlas vertebrae, located at the base of the skull, to misalign at the joints. When this happens, the joint capsule(ligament that surrounds the joint) is injured, the surrounding soft tissue is torn, and the result is postural muscle tone imbalance. The scalene muscles, located on the right and left side of the neck, become tight following neck trauma and pull the head forward causing loss of lordotic curve. In response to the forward head movement the mid thoracic muscles contract to keep the head upright against gravity. The low back structure often mirrors the neck. If the neck lordosis is lost most often the low back lordosis is lost also. To correct the underlying cause of these postural imbalances it is necessary to have the upper cervical spine misalignment corrected so the bodies postural centers can function normally.

What Does A Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractor Do?

Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractors are well trained specialty doctors who focus ALL of their attention on the relationship of the skull, atlas, axis, and their relationship to the brainstem and associated spinal nerves.  The Blair Upper Cervical Doctor runs a battery of tests to locate spinal cord pressure and interference resulting from spinal misalignment.  Once the patient is determined in having spinal misalignment precise imaging is taken to using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) or digital x-ray to visualize the joints and how they fit. Each joint in the upper cervical spine fits as a mirror image with the other. If spinal misalignment exists by viewing each joint the doctor can determine exactly how the vertebrae has misaligned from normal and determine the angulation of the joint. This information, which is unique to each individual, is then used in making a precise spinal correction without using any twisting, popping, or pulling.  The goal of the care is to stabilize the biomechanics of the upper cervical spine, so the central nervous system can function without structural interference.

Correction of the upper cervical spine allows the central nervous system to function more normally. Once corrected the spine will strive towards better posture, cervical curve loss will correct towards a more normal lordosis, in doing so pressure and strain on the spinal cord is relieved and more normal function ensues. While Blair Upper Cervical Care is NOT a cure all for postural imbalance and loss of lordosis it can help improve the quality of life for the person affected and in many cases halt or correct certain types of postural imbalance. Correcting the upper cervical spine is not only good for helping with posture but is also a health care procedure that should be used by everyone to ensure proper nervous system function. Dr. Drew Hall and Upper Cervical Chiropractic Health Care welcomes you to our website. We have two offices in the Los Angeles area. Specialty Doctors in both Los Angeles - and Carson work with you to improve specific problem areas, nerve functions, and overall health. The Blair technique, a specialty within Upper Cervical Chiropractic, is what we practice. This technique removes impediments to normal neurological function by correcting spinal misalignments at the cranio-cervical junction (CCJ- head- skull). A specific and non-invasive correction, done after x-rays and a series of tests, precisely corrects misalignments of the neck and upper spine. Muscle strain, neck pain, migraine headaches, sciatica, trigeminal neuralgia, Ménière's disease, insomnia, chronic pain, carpal tunnel, pain due to injury or muscle strain, and chronic back pain are among the ailments that can be improved or eliminated through this type of care.
