Meniere’s Disease and Migraine Headache Specialist Los Angeles

An article was published in 2016 in the journal of behavioral neurology examining the “intimate relationship between vestibular migraine and Meniere’s disease.” In this article we will discuss the findings of that research, and how a little-known procedure called Blair upper cervical chiropractic can help the body recover from these devastating illnesses.  Hang in there with us. The beginning of this article will be a little technical, however it will get better!

The conclusion of the article titled, “intimate relationship between vestibular migraine and Meniere’s disease” was both conditions had a great deal of overlap in both symptomatic presentation and diagnostic criteria. Migraines are thought to be the cause of vestibular migraine through the effects on the inner ear from the trigeminalvascular system and through the direct activation of the vestibular centers. The article further states that “while endolymphatic hydrops is still thought to be the cause of Meniere’s Disease, this theory has been challenged and migraine has been implicated as a common etiology between vestibular migraine and Meniere’s disease. There is not enough evidence to definitely link vestibular migraine and Meniere’s Disease in a mechanistic way, but the awareness of the blurred lines between the two disorders may assist in the clinical diagnosis and treatment.”

In typical allopathic thinking the conclusions of causes are not primary causes but secondary. If Meniere’s disease is CAUSED by hydrops, then what causes hydrops? If vestibular migraines are caused by migraines what causes migraines? What is the underlying cause in the body that results in hydrops? If migraines are “caused” by effects on the inner ear from the trigeminalvascular system through the direct activation of the vestibular centers what is it that is “activating” abnormal neurological responses? In this article we would like to discuss some of the latest research accomplished by Dr. Michael Burcon, pioneer in finding the underlying PRIMARY CAUSE that leads to hydrops, Meniere’s disease and other conditions.

Dr. Burcon, out of Michigan has spearheaded a movement inside of the Meniere’s disease community. Over the past decade Dr. Burcon has attended every Meniere’s disease symposium throughout the world.  His research into the underlying cause of Meniere’s shows the upper cervical spine injury is the precipitating factor in the genesis of Meniere’s disease.  Burcon has published several articles that show evidence that Meniere’s Disease may be caused by neck injury and associated spinal misalignments irritating the brainstem and central nervous system.

Upper Neck Injury and Meniere’s Disease- Meniere’s Disease and Chiropractic

There are 7 vertebrae in the neck. The top two bones in the neck called the atlas and axis are the most freely moveable bones in the spine. The skull weighs 10-12 pounds and sits on the atlas vertebrae and is only held together by ligaments and muscles. The skull atlas-axis junction is the most vulnerable area in the spine to injury. Injury in the form of whiplash, sports injuries, slips and falls can cause the upper neck-skull junction to misaligne resulting in interference to the central nervous system.

When the atlas or axis is subluxated (misaligned from injury), the weight of your head is no longer balanced evenly on the atlas. Rather, it is moved off center due to the structural misalignment and abnormal cervical muscle tone. When this happens, the rest of your body will begin to compensate for that shift of weight. One shoulder will drop down, one hip will come up bringing a leg up with it creating imbalance in your body. Now you have a problem with your back. One leg appears relatively shorter than the other and you are not walking with a balanced symmetrical gait.

This head-neck misalignment results in interference to the brainstem which houses the cranial nerves resonsoble for inner ear function and multiple other nuclei that control most body function. If the atlas is out of its proper position, it can irritate, constrict or disrupt vital nerve signals to any portion of your body. This can cause muscle or joint pain, organ dysfunction, lowered immunity and countless other conditions that you would not ordinarily relate to a problem originating in your neck, including the symptoms of Meniere’s disease. Therefore, if you suffer with Meniere’s Disease it is essential that you are examined by a qualified Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractor.

This is where Blair upper cervical chiropractic care comes in. Once the atlas axis misalignement has been imaged with cone beam cat scan (CBCT) or digital x-ray, adjusting the atlas (and axis) misalignment can take this pressure off your brainstem. The increase in nervous system function can help alleviate many problems by allowing your brain to send its healing messages throughout your body and allowing your spine to revert to its proper posture.

Endolymphatic Hydrops - Meniere’s Disease and Chiropractic

Ménière’s disease is also called “endolymphatic hydrops”. Endolymphatic hydrops, according to Wikipedia, is defined as, “is a disorder of the inner ear. It consists of an excessive build-up of the endolymph fluid, which fills the hearing and balance structures of the inner ear”

Your inner ear consists of two fluids, endolymph and perilymph . Hydrops is the  medical name for excess fluid. Thus endolymphatic hydrops really is just an excess of endolymph in the inner ear sac.

When everything is working correctly, your body continually produces new endolymph, and at the same time—since your inner ear is a closed system—absorbs an equal amount of the existing endolymph, thus maintaining a constant endolymphatic pressure.

Research keeps coming back to the idea that Ménière’s disease is associated with the build-up of excessive endolymph (endolymphatic fluid) in the balance (vestibular) portion of the inner ear.  The question remains what is it that causes the endolymph to back up? What is it that is causing the body to malfunction? Burcon is showing that an atlas or axis misalignment impairs your body’s ability to properly regulate properly. This can be an underlying cause of Meniere’s disease. Dr. Burcons Meniere’s disease and chiropractic research shows that in over 300 cases making specific corrections to the upper neck can alleviate the underlying cause of Meniere’s disease, NERVOUS SYSTEM INTERFERENCE.

The Whiplash Meniere’s Disease and Chiropractic Connection

Whiplash trauma can damage the upper cervical spine joints leading to structural changes that interfere with the brainstem and associated spina nerves. Dr. Burcon has established a link between both Meniere’s disease and trigeminal neuralgia being either caused or associated by whiplash injuries. Spinal misalignments affect the nervous system which in turn affects the Eustachian tubes and/or the trigeminal ganglion. Whiplash injuries set the stage for deterioration of normal nervous system function which can result in Meniere’s Disease and other conditions.

Dr. Burcon’s research showed that there was a high correlation between direction of atlas(c-1) misalignment and the affected ear of a Meniere’s Disease patient. Below you will see the breakdown of his research with regards to the affected side involved with Meniere’s Disease. It was found that 90 percent of the people in the research had a  backwards misalignment relative to the skull on the OPPOSITE side of the affected ear. Below is a list of misalignment direction associated with the side of the affected ear in Meniere’s Disease.

No. of occurrences

Direction of Subluxation and Ear Involved

0

Anterior (in front of) and Superior (above) on the opposite side to the involved ear

18

Anterior (in front of) and Superior above) on the same side as the involved ear

12

Posterior (behind) and Inferior (below) on the same side as the involved ear

270

Posterior (behind) and Inferior (below) on the opposite side to the involved ear (9)

While more research on Meniere’s Disease and Blair Upper Cervical is necessary, Burcon’s research and the anecdotal evidence of patients recovering from Meniere’s Disease and chiropractic offices ( Blair Chiropractic) around the country are mounting.

Migraine Headaches and Blair upper Cervical-Migraine Specialist Los Angeles

Migraine headaches are considered a dysregulation of the vascular system. Many theories have been discussed in the literature implicating that the nervous system is constricting and dilating blood vessels in the brain at inopportune times. First, a dilation of the cerebral arteries occurs, causing the hallmark visual disturbances that precede the onset of migraine pain. Then, the nervous system over reacts causing rapid dilation of the cerebral blood vessels causing the intense pounding pain that is associated with migraine headaches. Conventional medical treatment consists of pain killing medications. However, many migraine sufferers find that Excedrin with caffeine is the most effective pain reducer. This most likely is due to caffeine. Caffeine is a vasodilator. Dilation of the blood vessels counteracts the excess in constriction and relieves migraine pain in many cases

Most migraine sufferers have triggers such as foods or stressful events. Removing chocolate, alcohol, nuts, wheat, and other triggers has proven helpful in many cases but still does not address the underlying cause.  What is it that causes the nervous system to malfunction and the vascular system to go awry? While research and big pharma keep researching drugs to treat symptoms, upper cervical doctors across the nation have been addressing one of the underlying causes of nervous system dysfunction and the cause of migraine headaches-Upper neck trauma.

WE discussed at length how Meniere’s Disease can result from whiplash and similar traumas that disrupt the normal neurological integrity at the brainstem level. Similarly, with migraine headache, past injury to the upper neck can irritate the vital centers in the brainstem causing the autonomic (part of nervous system you have no conscious control over) nervous system to abnormally control the vascular system (blood vessels), resulting in migraine headaches. Even though our office does not focus on anyone condition, you could consider our four doctors in our two offices to be a “migraine specialist Los Angeles office.”  Over the past 16 years our office has seen hundreds of migraine cases. It is wonderful to see many cases recover their health and live their life with joy again. Below you can listen to two patients who recovered from their migraine headaches following Blair upper cervical chiropractic care in our office:

Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care Los Angeles-What Do We Do?

Our office utilizes the latest in imaging technology. Our Los Angeles office recently purchased a cone beam cat scan (CBCT). This imaging technology allows us to determine EXACTLY where the neck has been injured and how the vertebrae has misaligned.  Blair Upper Cervical Doctors are experts at determining where your neck is out of alignment. Furthermore, once it is known which joint is misaligned  a gentle precise force is applied to restore normal joint motion which removes nerve interference to the brainstem and associated nerves. Over time the doctor will monitor the patient. Each visit tests are run to determine whether or not a spinal misalignment is present. If no spinal misalignment is present, no correction is given. It is during the time of “holding the correction” that healing takes place.  Over time repair takes place within the soft tissue of the joints of the neck and  normal nerve supply is restored throughout the body.  Upper Cervical Care is NOT a CURE ALL. With that said because upper neck corrections affect the brain stem it is possible to see improvements in a plethora of conditions that many would not relate back to the neck. Our office commonly helps patients with” Post-Concussion Syndrome, Migraine, Vertigo, Meniere’s Disease, Neck Pain, Trigeminal Neuralgia, Sciatica, Insomnia, Fibromyalgia, and other chronic health conditions.

Upper Cervical Health Care is a multi-office business with two locations and four doctors. Each are specially trained in the Blair Upper Cervical Technique.
